A change in the "Dune" universe. The official title for the third installment of the cult series has been announced.

A change in the "Dune" universe. The official title for the third installment of the cult series has been announced.

"Dune: Part Three" is the official title of Denis Villeneuve's third film based on the books by Frank Herbert. Until now, the highly anticipated production was provisionally titled "Dune Messiah," a nod to the 1969 book "Dune Messiah," which inspired the film.

Following the box office and artistic successes of two adaptations of Frank Herbert's "Dune," Denis Villeneuve steps behind the camera for the third and final time in the popular series. He will later direct the new installment of the James Bond franchise , but for now, he is fully committed to bringing the sci-fi classic to the big screen.

It's known that the upcoming film will feature sequences shot with IMAX cameras, but it won't be a fully IMAX-filmed film. This was likely based on a statement by IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond , which turned out to be misunderstood. Therefore, the first and, for now, only such film will be Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey."

Filming for "Dune: Part Three" is expected to begin as soon as possible. Timothée Chalamet will reprise his role as Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides. This time, audiences will follow his struggles as the Emperor of Dune. He will once again be joined on screen by Zendaya and Jason Momoa, according to Variety.

Will the third installment of "Dune" be the last?

In interviews, Villeneuve has emphasized that the third installment in the "Dune" franchise will not be the final one . The director and screenwriter treats the first two films as a single entity. Now, however, he intends to create something completely different and with its own identity. "Dune: Part Three" is scheduled for release in December 2026.
